Pedallers of dissonant death metal Mors Verum have returned with their fourth release to melt more minds and create a sonic experience that will no doubt capture the imaginations of hordes of extreme metal fans. Released on Transcending Obscurity, this is five tracks of forward-thinking death metal that demands attention and should help the Canadian outfit achieve the acclaim they deserve.
Opening track ‘Bloodied Teeth’ opens with, and is underpinned by, a pulsating riff that is almost hypnotic and keeps the track on the rails whilst chaos ensues around it. This gives way to the second track ‘Your Apocalypse’ which serves up suspense with a side of angular riffing that really creates an uneasy atmosphere, never letting the listener get too comfortable. These are just two of the flavours on offer throughout a record that shows a band that have found their style and are executing it with confidence.
Although there are only five tracks here, the variations in sound, the ebb and flow of the discordant blasts coupled with the more progressive elements creates a tension and release type effect that leads to a heavy yet cathartic experience that fans of bands like Ulcerate and Gorguts should be making a note of. Whilst there are only five tracks here, you never feel short-changed. The songs are long enough to give the band enough time to let them fully unfold whilst at the same time, they manage to hit a sweet spot, so they never feel overly long.
Death metal that leans towards the more avant-garde and progressive end of the spectrum can often be accused of being complicated for the sake of it, I can assure you though that this is not the case with Mors Verum. All the intricacies are done so with a purpose in mind and create a complex but rewarding experience that is no less extreme for it. As a result, this is one album that all fans of death metal should at least check out and is one that many will fall in love with.
8.5/10.
